The transmission shaft is generally equipped with a sliding spline consisting of a sliding fork and a spline shaft to realize the change of transmission length. In order to reduce the axial sliding resistance and wear of the sliding spline, sometimes the spline teeth are phosphated or sprayed with a nylon layer; some of them are put into the spline groove with rolling elements such as needles, rollers or balls, and rolling friction is used instead of sliding friction in order to improve the transmission efficiency. But this structure is more complex, higher cost. Sometimes for the transmission of severe shock load, can also be used flexible drive shaft. Splines on the drive shaft should have lubrication and dust measures, spline teeth and keyway clearance should not be too large, and should be assembled according to the corresponding marking, so as not to install the wrong drive shaft dynamic balance assembly.

The length and angle of the drive shaft and its range of variation are determined by the general layout design of the car. The design should ensure that when the length of the drive shaft is large, the spline sleeve and the shaft have enough matching length; and the length of the hour does not appear top dead. The size of the angle of the drive shaft directly affects the life of the universal joint cross shaft and needle roller bearings, the efficiency of the universal drive and the unevenness of the cross shaft rotation.

Transmission shaft in a variety of different host products supporting the use of its surrounding working environment is more complex, such as temperature, humidity, water, steam, dust, sand, oil, acid, alkali, corrosive media, salt water, radiation and other conditions, is the choice of coupling must be considered one of the important factors. For high temperature, low temperature, oil, acid, alkali media work quality, should not be used to general rubber as the elastic element of the coupling material, should choose the metal elastic element of the elastic coupling, such as diaphragm coupling, serpentine spring coupling.
